What should I look for in a private tutor?

All our tutors have created a unique profile about themselves, which showcases their expertise/ experiences. However, here are some key things you might want to consider when making your choice.

  • Expertise
  • Qualifications
  • Experience
  • References
  • Feedback
  • Learning style
  • Availability

Questions to ask a tutor?

Here are some top tip questions to get you started on your way to finding the ideal private tutor.

  • What qualifications do they have?
  • How many years teaching experience do they have?
  • Do they have experience in exams or the national curriculum?
  • Do they have a DRB or references?
  • Do they have any teaching materials?
  • How will they evaluate your learning needs?
  • What subject areas do they specialise in?
  • Have they tutored others studying your course?

How can I prepare for my first lesson with a private tutor?

  • Nothing is more important than peace of mind, so ask to see their qualifications, certificates, Criminal Records Bureau (DRB) and give references a call
  • Tuition should take place in a quiet and calm environment to get the most benefit from the sessions
  • Parents or guardians should always be present when a child is having a lesson
  • If tuition takes place at a tutor's home, please take all safety precautions to ensure that someone knows where you are
  • Always be prepared about what you would like to discuss with the tutor, highlighting areas of difficulties, what you like or dislike about a subject or topic.

What should I expect from my first lesson?

This is a chance to really get to know your private tutor, and to see how they can assist you. You will be able to discuss all your needs and requirements. They may expect you to undertake a formal or informal exercise if this is necessary, to access your understanding and see how best they can help you.

How do I know that my child is progressing?

Your child's progress is very important, and therefore it is equally important to communicate any concerns you may have with the private tutor. Remember, if you think that the sessions should be done in a different manner i.e. slower, faster or at a more advanced level depending on your child's learning, this should be discussed with the tutor in order to get the best out of your child's education.

Where will the tuition take place?

Tuition can take place at your home, tutors home, online or at a place of convenience. Private tutors, who are registered with us, specify on their profile where they will be willing to travel to and where they will be happy to offer tuition. By searching each tutors profile, it offers you the flexibility to choose the right tutor who meets your requirements. When you contact the tutor, you can specify in your request where you would like the tuition to take place.

Please Note: As specified in our Terms and Conditions, we will not be responsible for the collecting or distribution of payments for tuition, so please make sure that you arrange this with the pupil prior to engaging in any tuition.

Why our feedback helps you?

We encourage that pupils give feedback about tutors they have had as this feedback helps potential pupils make the right choices about the most suitable tutors.

How does Turtle Tutors offer support?

If you are experiencing any technical difficulties, you can contact us via our 24/7 online support where we will be happy to assist you.

If you have any further questions please contact us.

Our membership options

Our private tutors have two registration options.

Pay-Per-Pupil

Members on the Pay-Per-Pupil Membership can create a free profile and will be expected to pay a £14.99 one-off commencement fee for each tuition introduction within 14 days of accepting a tuition job. We will send you a reminder for the payments.

Annual Membership

The Annual Membership gives members the benefit of receiving unlimited tutoring requests throughout the year without having to pay any further commencement fees. If you sign up for an Annual Membership, you will pay £35 for the duration of the 12 months from the date of registration.

How payments are processed?

Our payments are processed securely through PayPal. Once you decide whether you would like to Pay-Per-Pupil or take an Annual Membership, you can arrange payment through this secure method.

Can I switch to an Annual Membership?

Yes, tutors who are Pay-Per-Pupil members may switch over to the Annual membership at anytime and receive the added benefits. You can switch over by simply logging into your account and selecting 'upgrade Membership'.

How will I know when I get a tuition request?

Any tuition requests will be sent to you by email. You will receive this information about the prospective pupil detailing information about the request, which will be sent directly to your email address. If you click on the link, it will direct you to your account, where you can view and respond to the request. It is important that you promptly accept or decline a job offered to you, so that pupils are able to otherwise look for another suitable tutor. Failure to do so may lead to your account becoming suspended.

Once I accept a job what happens next?

Once you accept a job, and the Pupil has confirmed they would like to commence tuition with you, the pupil's details will be unlocked and you will automatically be sent through the request. This will include the pupil's contact details so you can go ahead and arrange your first lesson. A Pupil will also receive your details so you are free to contact each other, please do so promptly.

Please note: Once you accept a tuition request, you are entering into a contract with the pupil to perform the tutoring services you have advertised, so please make sure you are fully able to meet the requirements of the pupil prior to engaging in this contract.

How can I update my profile?

You can update your profile at anytime by logging into your account on the website. You will be able to update your profile, including subjects, fees and any other information in the Team area. This service is available 24/7.

How is a pupil's feedback uploaded to my profile?

We generally ask pupils 2 weeks after commencement of tuition to offer feedback about the tutor. We will ask them to rate the tutor and offer any constructive feedback. This information will be uploaded onto your profile. We do this for your benefit because people always like to know when something is good. So the more feedback you receive, the more tuition requests you are likely to receive. This information will also be emailed to you, for you to assess how well the tuition went and aid you in any positive changes you may want to consider for future jobs.

Do I need to have a Criminal Records Bureau (DRB) check  and references to be a tutor?

By law there is no legal requirement to have a DRB to work as a tutor. We do advise that all our tutors hold a valid DRB, when it comes to working with young children. It would be helpful for parents and pupils if you had up to date reference, based on previous experiences .

However, if you require further information regarding obtaining a DRB there are agencies that can provide you with such information, please visit https://www.gov.uk/disclosure-barring-service-check/overview.

Do I need to be a qualified teacher to tutor?

The answer is no, although a lot of tutors are qualified teachers; tutors may be academics, professionals and graduates. What is important is that anyone who has a skill and knowledge in a subject area may tutor. Parents and pupils are looking for different abilities and credentials in tutors. This is why using our service gives them the tools to pick who is right for them. See our Top Tutor Tips for more advice.

I've never tutored before can I become a private tutor?

The answer is yes, if you have never tutored before you can register as a tutor with Turtle Tutors. We believe that skills and talent are equally as important for our vocational tutors, as pupils are seeking tutors to help enhance new skills or hobbies. So if you think that you have a skill or talent in something and could potentially teach this to others, register to become a tutor and outline your skills and expertise where pupils can select you as a tutor.

When you set up your profile you will be given the chance to showcase what subjects you will be willing to teach and how much you will be charging. You will be able to specify your qualifications and experience, which will allow pupils to make the most appropriate choice for themselves.

We advise all new tutors to make sure they select the right subjects they have knowledge to teach well in, as this will be a reflection on you, so always give the right impression from the outset, as our pupils and parents leave feedback about their experience. More Top Tutor Tips are available on our Tutor Pages.

Can I teach online?

Yes, we give you the option in the registration process to specify how you will arrange your tutoring sessions. If you wish to offer online tuition, you can specify this on your profile, as some pupils will be seeking tutors who offer this service.

Please Note: As specified in our Terms and Conditions, we will not be responsible for the collecting or distribution of payments for tuition, so please make sure that you arrange this with the pupil prior to engaging in any tuition.

Are we employed by Turtle Tutors?

All tutors work on a self-employed basis and are therefore, responsible for their own national insurance and tax.

If you have any further questions please contact us where we will be happy to help.
